This study aims to explore the process, strategies, and challenges involved in translating English texts into Indonesian. The primary objective is to analyze how meaning is transferred across languages while maintaining linguistic, cultural, and contextual equivalence. Through a qualitative descriptive method, this research employs document analysis by examining a variety of English texts, including academic, literary, and media-based content. The selected texts were translated into Indonesian, and the translations were evaluated using a combination of linguistic theory, cultural adaptation strategies, and the functionalist approach in translation studies.
The analysis focuses on aspects such as word choice, idiomatic expressions, syntactic structures, and cultural references. Particular attention is given to cases of polysemy, untranslatability, and shifts in meaning during the translation process. The study also compares literal and dynamic translation approaches, identifying which techniques lead to more accurate and natural-sounding translations in Indonesian. The findings indicate that while literal translation may preserve form, it often fails to convey the intended message effectively, especially when dealing with culturally bound expressions or figurative language. On the other hand, dynamic translation allows for greater flexibility and adaptation, resulting in more effective communication of meaning.
In conclusion, successful English-Indonesian translation requires not only linguistic competence but also cultural sensitivity and contextual awareness. Translators must make informed choices based on the purpose of translation, target audience, and text type. This study contributes to a better understanding of the translation process and provides insights for both novice and professional translators.
