Advanced Writing: A Course for Non-Native English Learners
Advanced Writing: A Course for Non-Native English Learners is designed to equip learners with the skills necessary to produce clear, coherent, and academically sound writing in English. This course goes beyond the basics, focusing on refining grammar, expanding vocabulary, developing logical organization, and cultivating an academic tone appropriate for university-level and professional contexts.
One of the core features of this course is its emphasis on the writing process. Students are guided through brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. Each stage is explored in detail to help learners understand that effective writing is not merely about stringing words together but about structuring ideas logically and persuasively. Learners will also engage with a variety of writing genres, including argumentative essays, analytical responses, reflective pieces, and research-based papers.
Particular attention is given to common challenges faced by non-native English learners, such as grammar interference from the first language, improper use of idioms or collocations, and lack of cohesion or coherence in extended texts. Through targeted practice, peer feedback, and instructor-led workshops, learners gradually gain the confidence and competence to write more effectively.
In addition, the course introduces students to referencing styles such as APA and MLA, promoting academic integrity and proper source citation. Vocabulary building activities, sentence variety techniques, and transitions are integrated into the lessons to strengthen clarity and fluency.
By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate the ability to write with a clear purpose and audience in mind, organize information logically, support ideas with evidence, and revise their work for clarity, grammar, and style. Ultimately, Advanced Writing serves as a bridge that prepares non-native English learners for the demands of academic writing and professional communication in English-speaking environments.
